My personal Design taste has come so far in the last several years.

I have finally learned to simply lean into things that speak to me and let that guide my designs.

In ourbedroom, I could not love this wallpaper from @nextwallwallpaper more. It is the perfect moody, muted tones and I have always been obsessed with floral prints, especially with little birdies.

When I started working on McKenzie’s space, I was surprised to learn that she knew EXACTLY what she wanted. Every time I sent over a design plan, she had something to say and revisions were made 🤣

In the end, we designed a space that she LOVES. Furthermore, her room will still work for her as she grows into a young lady. 🩷

Jo’s Room Makeover is FINALLY complete!!

Although we KNOW that I wasn’t super pumped about her Design plan in the beginning, I got on board! It turned out so dang cute and she tells me every single day how much she loves it.

Kids should have their own little slice of our Homes too. Even if they share a room with a sibling, their side or their bunk should be theirs, I believe. It should be their comfy space. Their safe space.

Kids rooms are my favorite and I have quite a few coming up, so stay tuned!

Another PRIMARY example of #usewhatyouhave

This hutch was Matt’s Great Grandmother’s. I have held onto it for years. When I renovated the laundry room, I mounted it, painted it the wall color and styled it. It adds so much space to display my treasures and I love how it feels in here.

The piece under it was my Grandmother’s sewing machine. It no longer works, but it is still special to me.

By taking things that are meaningful to me, that I already had on hand, and altering them to work for what I needed, I solved an issue for the price of a can of paint. I also think using older items like this adds so much character.

I have a rule when I thrift…
I have to know WHERE the item is going. So for about a year, I have been thrifting for JUST the right pieces of vintage artwork, with the right amount of green and the rightttt patina…

Do NOT come at me for painting this piece!!!

I simply don’t have the patience to strip, re-sand, etc. etc. I did that ONCE and that was more than enough for me!

I had some leftover Cabinet and Furniture Paint from @valsparpaint that I used in our Airbnb and it happened to be the PERFECT color to pull out some of the darker oranges in Jo’s new comforter.

I absolutely adore how this turned out. I still have some lights coming for it, as well as some styling items, but wanted to share the steps along the way!

Fire safety is always #1 🔥

There are so many weird things in our 1968 home that just don’t make much sense. This light fixture above these cabinets is one of those things. I thought about replacing it with something with a cord that I could swag somewhere else, but worried about the swing of the cabinet doors, so I just decided to cover it.

I found this basket at the Goodwill and thought it would work JUST right. Now it adds texture and interest.

Use what you have and do what you like.

It’s JUST Paint.

I spent YEARS keeping myself in an All-White Walls box. I would put aside or pass on decor that I felt drawn too because it had “too much color”…

2023 was the year that I finally gave myself permission to Design with decor and colors that SPEAK to me; that make me feel warm and cozy and create spaces within our home that feel like being wrapped in a huge, comfy wool sweater.

Matt told me the other day that out of all the times I have changed things around, this is his favorite our house has ever looked.

I honestly cannot believe it is a New Year already. And let me tell you something, I HATE the phrase “New Year, New Me.”

How about “New Year, a Better Me.” We can always improve ourselves, and I have quite a few things I plan on focusing on improving. I am looking forward to 2024.

When I find a piece at the Thrift Store or Antique Store, you can FEEL the history of it. The fact that my home is NOT the first home it has adorned is SO cool to me.
